WKAR Radio Campaign falls Short of Goal -- But Still Raises Dollars and Nails
WKAR Radio wrapped up its annual October on-air membership campaign on Monday morning, October 13, bringing in $111,646 toward its on-air fundraising goal of $165,000. Along with many renewals, 260 new members joined the station.
In addition, the campaign brought in nearly $24,000 from pledges made online and in response to a renewal mailing. Additional dollars from that mailing continue to come in, delayed by the Columbus Day holiday.
WKAR joined forces with ProBuild and Habitat for Humanity Lansing during this campaign. ProBuild matched every dollar raised with one nail to be given to Habitat for its Lansing homes. Since it takes 45,000 nails to build a home, the partnership brought Habitat enough nails to build three homes.
“Our campaign came at a challenging time,” says WKAR’s development director, Cindy Herfindahl. “Last week we experienced one of the most significant financial market crises since the Great Depression. Many of our listeners were undoubtedly preoccupied with this. We can only surmise that some were feeling the pinch and others were turning to ‘all news’ to keep abreast of the financial situation. This was a difficult time to fundraise yet everyone handled it like the professionals they are!”
Herfindahl also noted that the partnership with Habitat for Humanity Lansing and ProBuild, along with other businesses that provided challenge grants, helped underscore WKAR’s connection to the community and helped spur listeners to contribute.
She adds that “By not reaching the goal for this campaign, we will be looking at ways to make up the difference between what we raised and what our goal was. Those discussions will be taking place over the next few weeks.”
