portrait: HelenMilliken and William Milliken "The Millikens" Focuses on Michigan's Former "First Couple"

Michigan's longest serving governor, William Milliken, and the state's former First Lady, Helen Milliken, reveal their innermost thoughts on everything from life in the political fast lane to the next race for president in The Millikens, a special one-hour program premiering in June on Michigan public television stations. (Check local listings.)

Senior Capitol Correspondent Tim Skubick, who has covered the former First Family for over 35 years, delves into the reasons Milliken ran for office, how he almost died during 50 bombing missions during World War II, and how the couple tried to balance their high profile political lives while raising two children at the same time. Milliken tells Skubick he regrets not spending more time with Bill Jr. and Elaine.

The program was taped in the living room of the Milliken residence on the West Bay in Traverse City and comes on the heels of the publication of a new book, William G. Milliken: Michigan's Passionate Moderate, by author David Dempsey.

The exchange also centers on their thoughts concerning the current governor and GOP challenger Dick DeVos. Both Millikens take exception to things Jennifer Granholm has done and express reservations about the challenger, too.

Those who grew up during the 14 years they were in office will see the man and woman many came to admire. Those not familiar with the couple will come away with an appreciation of how the political game should be played.

The broadcast The Millikens takes viewers into the private lives of two of Michigan's most noteworthy politicians as they share not only their political opinions, but their sense of humor and zest for life.

The Millikens will also be available for online viewing at WKAR.org. An audio download of the full 90-minute interview and an interview transcript will also be available online.

Tim Skubick has spoken with Governor and Mrs. Milliken several times during his tenure in office, most notably in several statewide An Evening with the Governor specials. His last extended broadcast conversation with the couple was in 1982. Skubick anchors the weekly Michigan public television series Off the Record, which focuses on Michigan politics, as well as hosting other political specials.

The Millikens is produced by Joe Barnhart and Tim Skubick for WKAR-TV, with Timothy W. Zeko, executive producer. WKAR-TV was recently named Michigan Public Television Station of the Year by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. WKAR is part of Michigan State University Broadcasting Services, which also includes WKAR-DT, cable stations ‘KAR2, 3, and 4, 90.5 WKAR, AM 870, WKAR.org, WMSU.org, Interactive Video Services and Radio Talking Book.
